HOMEMADE IN BANGALORE

Authentic Karnataka Masala, Made the Way It Has Always Been Made

Karnataka cooking has its own quiet rhythm. The same blends turn up in every home, just made a little differently. Rasavita is a small Bangalore kitchen that grinds these masalas the way our families always did.

Authentic Karnataka masala from Rasavita

Rasavita started because friends and family kept asking, “What masala do you use?” We have not changed how we make these blends since then. We just make a little more of them now.

The Karnataka Classics We Make

Five blends that show up in most Karnataka kitchens. Each one is made in small batches, freshly ground, with no preservatives or artificial colour.

THE DIFFERENCE

What Makes a Karnataka Masala a Karnataka Masala

South India has four major cuisines, and each one builds flavour differently. Karnataka blends sit somewhere between the deep heat of Andhra cooking and the rounder, more coconut-led flavour of Kerala. The idea is balance, not loudness.

A traditional Karnataka sambar powder leans on coriander, roasted dal and curry leaves. A rasam powder is built around black pepper, cumin and a milder chilli. Bisi Bele Bath and Vangi Bath powders are blends you will not find in most other South Indian states.

We follow these same proportions. Our blends taste like the masalas you would find in a Karnataka home twenty years ago, because that is exactly what they are.

OUR PROCESS

How We Make Our Masala

Three things we do every time, without shortcuts.

Direct from the farmer

Our chillies come from Andhra Pradesh, where chilli farming is taken seriously. We use different chilli varieties for different products rather than the same generic chilli for everything. Coriander, cumin and turmeric come from their home regions.

Roasted and ground in small batches

We roast spices gently and grind in small amounts. This protects the natural oils that carry flavour. A large industrial mill heats the spice and dulls it. A small batch keeps it bright. Each batch is made to be sold within weeks, not stored for months.

Nothing added that does not belong

No preservatives. No artificial colour. No MSG. No anti-caking agents. Just the spices listed on the pack. We are FSSAI certified and our blends are tested for quality, but the recipes are unchanged from how they were made at home.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Karnataka masala?+
Karnataka masala refers to the family of spice blends used across Karnataka kitchens for everyday cooking. It includes Bisi Bele Bath Powder, Vangi Bath Powder, Sambar Powder, Rasam Powder and Pongal Premix. Each blend has its own roasting style and proportion of spices, refined over generations of home cooking.
How is Karnataka masala different from regular South Indian masala?+
South Indian cuisine spans Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, and each region has its own way of building flavour. Karnataka blends tend to be balanced rather than fiery, with a careful proportion of coriander, dal and curry leaves. Bisi Bele Bath and Vangi Bath powders are unique to Karnataka and are not part of the masala range in other South Indian states.
Are Rasavita masalas preservative free?+
Yes. We do not add preservatives, artificial colour, MSG or anti-caking agents. Our masalas contain only the spices and ingredients you would use at home. Stored in an airtight container away from direct sunlight, they stay fresh for six to eight months.
Where do you source your spices from?+
We source directly from farmers in the regions known for each spice. Our chillies come from Andhra Pradesh, and we use different chilli varieties for different products rather than a single generic chilli. Coriander, cumin, turmeric and other spices are sourced from their home regions to keep flavour and quality consistent.
Do you ship Karnataka masala outside Bangalore?+
Yes. We ship across India through Delhivery. Orders above Rs 699 ship free. Standard delivery takes three to seven business days from Bangalore.
How do I use Karnataka masala blends?+
Each pack carries a recipe on the back. Bisi Bele Bath Powder is used to make the one-pot rice and dal dish of the same name. Vangi Bath Powder is mixed with cooked rice and brinjal. Pongal Premix is a quick way to prepare ven pongal. Sambar Powder goes into sambar, and Rasam Powder into rasam. Two to three teaspoons per dish is usually enough for a family of four.
